Dr. Robert Duane Ballard (born June 30, 1942) is a retired United States Navy officer and a professor of oceanography at the University of Rhode Island, best known for his pioneering work in underwater archaeology, including maritime archaeology and the study of shipwrecks, and for discovering the wreck of the RMS Titanic.
