Two sworn enemies are forced into partnership and dropped into a haunted instance they have to clear together. In the Republican-era arc, opera performers Chen Qiaotou and Chen Xiangkou agree to sing for the occupying Japanese army — a performance staged to buy their neighbors time, and one neither of them intends to walk away from.
